When people shop for stud welding equipment, the power source usually gets all the attention. But the weld actually happens at the gun. The stud welding gun holds the stud, positions it against the work and controls how the stud and base metal meet. A great machine paired with the wrong gun, or a worn one, will still produce inconsistent results.
Here is a practical look at what a stud gun does, which parts matter most and how to choose one that fits your work.
What a Stud Welding Gun Actually Does
A stud gun is much more than a trigger and a handle. During every weld it controls three things:
- Stud position. The stud has to sit square to the work surface at the correct height.
- Lift or gap. On drawn arc guns, the gun lifts the stud to draw the arc. On gap style CD guns, the stud starts a set distance from the work.
- Plunge. The gun drives the stud into the molten pool at the right moment and with the right force.
If any one of these is off, you will see it in the finished weld.
The Parts That Matter Most
Chuck. The chuck grips the stud and carries welding current into it. Each chuck is sized for a specific stud diameter. A worn or stretched chuck grips poorly, which leads to poor electrical contact, burn marks and studs that weld crooked. Chucks are consumables, so keeping spares on hand is one of the easiest ways to protect weld quality.
Collets. Some studs and gun configurations use collets to hold the stud securely. Like chucks, they need to match the stud size exactly.
Legs, foot and faceplate. These set how far the stud protrudes and keep the gun square to the work. A gun that rocks or tilts during the weld will produce angled studs and uneven fillets.
Ferrule grip. Drawn arc guns use a ferrule grip to hold the ceramic ferrule around the stud. The ferrule shapes the weld and shields the arc. We cover ferrules in more detail in our post on why ferrules matter in arc stud welding.
Spring pressure and plunge adjustment. These control how the stud enters the weld pool. Setting them correctly is key to a full, even weld.
Cable and connectors. Damaged cables or loose connections waste energy and cause inconsistent welds, even when the machine settings are correct.

CD Stud Guns vs Drawn Arc Stud Guns
CD stud guns are generally lighter and more compact. They come in two main styles:
- Contact guns start with the stud touching the work.
- Gap guns hold the stud slightly away from the surface before driving it down.
Gap guns are often preferred for materials like aluminum.
Drawn arc stud guns include a lift mechanism that raises the stud to form the arc, then plunges it back into the weld pool. They are built to handle larger diameter studs and heavier welding currents, so they tend to be larger and heavier.
How to Match a Stud Gun to Your Work
Start with these questions:
- What stud diameters will you weld? Every gun has a working range. Choose one that covers the studs you use most often.
- How much volume will you run? A gun used for occasional maintenance work has different demands than one running a full production shift.
- How hard are the weld locations to reach? Gun weight, balance and reach affect operator fatigue and accuracy, especially on overhead or awkward work.
- Is it compatible with your machine? The gun and power source need to work together.
- Are accessories easy to get? A gun is only as useful as your ability to keep chucks, legs and ferrule grips in stock.
Signs Your Stud Gun Needs Attention
Watch for these warning signs:
- Studs welding at an angle
- Uneven or incomplete fillets
- Burn marks or discolouration on the chuck
- Studs sticking in the chuck after welding
- Cables that run unusually warm
Catching these early prevents scrap and downtime. Most of these issues can be solved by replacing a consumable or adjusting the gun setup.
